Progressive Rock Band : Gentle Giant

Thành lập vào buổi bình minh sơ khai của Progressive Rock là năm 1969, cũng là năm mà King Crimson cho ra siêu phẩm phi thường In The Court Of Crimson King. Đến giữa thập niên 70 thì Gentle Giant đã nắm trong tay những album tầm cao và trở thành một tên tuổi lớn trong Progressive Rock đúng như ý nghĩa của tên ban nhạc (Ông lớn dịu dàng). Gentle Giant đóng góp cho Prog Rock với việc pha trộn nhạc Hard Rock với nhạc cổ điển và giọng ca thời trung cổ vào Prog Rock. Hay chính xác hơn là lời đánh giá của một nhà phê bình âm nhạc là "Một sự pha trộn kỳ lạ và trái ngược của nhạc cổ điển, giọng ca trung cổ với nhạc Rock và nhạc Jazz"

Gentle Giant được sinh ra từ đống tro tàn của ban nhạc Simon Dupree&The Big Sound. Simon Dupree&The Big Sound là một ban nhạc theo hơi hướng R&B với nòng cốt là anh em nhà Shulman là Derek, Ray và Phil Shulman. Vào năm 1967, bị cuốn vào sự quyến rũ như ma túy của thể loại Psychedelic, họ lại chuyển sang Psychedelic và đã có được một hit trên các bảng xếp hạng là ca khúc "Kites"(Những cánh diều). Sau khi lập nên Gentle Giant, họ quyết định từ bỏ các hướng đi của ngày xưa là R&B và Psychedelic. Với mục tiêu đó, Derek chuyển sang hát và chơi guitar rồi cả bass, Ray ngoài cây violin đặc trưng thì cũng ẵm thêm cây bass và cũng có thể hát tốt. Phil Shulman thì điều khiển cây saxophone đồng thời họ có được Kerry Minnear trên cây keyboard và Gary Green chơi guitar. Đội ngũ này ban đầu mời về Martin Smith chơi trống, nhưng sau đó họ cũng cộng tác với vài nghệ sĩ trống và bộ gõ khác trong 3 năm đầu tồn tại.

The Beasts Of Bourbon - Sour Mash[1988]

From the beginning, the Beasts of Bourbon were formed as a drinking club/side project of the Australian underground rock scene of the early '80s. In the Beasts' ranks were members of the Cruel Sea, Hoodoo Gurus, Johnnys, and the Scientists, who assembled to cut an album of blues-drenched sleaze-rock one afternoon in 1984. The Axeman's Jazz became a springboard for much later success as a full-time working band. In 1988, the group released Sour Mash, which was a dream come true for fans of the Australian rock and garage punk that fused the sensibilities of their disparate groups to great success and marked the transition to full-time concern for the group members. With the Johnnys and Scientists both calling it a day just prior to Sour Mash, the collective creative forces were pooled to make the Beasts of Bourbon's landmark in which remains their prime document. A raw blues-rock album with post-punk afflictions, the band was often compared to the Birthday Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and the Surrealists. Although, maybe that similarity is only extra evident due to sharing producer Tony Cohen, who hand shaped some of the best Australian rock albums of the '80s and '90s. Sour Mash was produced by Phil Punch and the Beasts of Bourbon, which should be indicative enough from such titles alone what kind of a raucous affair the album is. With the enigmatic Tex Perkins, who could be one of rock & roll's last great frontmen, and the blistering slide-guitar-driven sound, the band does a fine job of re-creating the sound of a twisted night out at the pub. The Beasts certainly have stakes on a claim to the phrase "desert rock" on this outing, which has Kim Salmon's trademark guitar twang all over it. The follow-up Black Milk disappoints considerably next to this, undoubtedly their finest work. ~ Skip Jansen, All Music Guide

Jr. Juggernaut - Ghost Poison

No one seems to be talking about Ghost Poison and I find the omissions confounding, to say the least. These guys play a brand of guitar rock that's part Dinosaur Jr., part John Cougar Mellencamp, part HA?sker DA?, all awesome. The musicianship on this record (especially the guitar solos) are top-notch.

Uaral là một cái tên ko xa lạ gì đối với những rockfan, mà đặc biệt là Doom metal fan, nói là rock chứ Uaral chỉ đơn thuần là một band Neo-folk có một chút ảnh hưởng của Doom, vì vậy, tất cả nhạc của họ, đơn giản chỉ có thể gọi là buồn. Một nét buồn tựa như vĩnh cửu.

Mưa, sinh ra như một mặc định của trời đất về nỗi buồn, và Uaral cùng với những con mưa rầm rì trong nhạc của họ cũng vậy.

Quẩn quanh tìm kiếm trong không gian tịch mịch một sự tồn tại của con người, có cái gì đó cô độc lạ lùng giữa nơi này.

Nổi bật trong nhạc của Uaral là tiếng Guitar Acoustic, đã có quá nhiều sự khai thác đến triệt để cảm xúc của cây guitar thuộc hệ mộc này, nhưng có lẽ là chưa đủ nếu chưa được nghe Uaral.

Tiếng guitar thường đột ngột vang lên trong tĩnh lặng, rồi như một con suối, chảy xuyên suốt trong bức tranh mang hai màu trắng đen tờ mờ.

Nếu một lúc nào đó, tôi muốn diễn tả nỗi buồn, thì không có gì thích hợp hơn là âm thanh này, nó mang tất cả mọi trạng thái của thứ mà người ta gọi là buồn, từ nỗi buồn man mác cho đến cái buồn ràn rạt như chà xát vào lòng vậy.

Thường có cái gì đó nhoi nhói.

Rồi từ những con suối buồn tênh, dồn ứ trong vũng nước vô định hình, dồn ứ trong những tuyệt vọng, hòa trong âm thanh distor guitar, tiếng ca cất lên như dòng thác mãnh liệt và vội vã, trong vô vàn tiếng thở than ai oái, trong trùng trùng điệp điệp cảm xúc vô định, trong nỗi khốn cùng không thể chấm dứt ...

Và mưa đấy

Và mưa đấy, trong tiếng nhạc khắc khoải.

Tôi thường chờ đợi mưa để nghe nhạc của Uaral.
