Nhạc Yanni là hỗn hợp âm thanh đa dân tộc, đặc biệt là các dân tộc thiểu số. Người nghe như phảng phất các bản thánh ca của thổ dân châu Mỹ, những làn điệu châu Phi và cả âm sắc châu Á. Yanni còn vận dụng các nhạc cụ truyền thống của nhiều dân tộc trên khắp thế giới một cách tài tình mà người nghe vẫn thấy hợp lý. Đó là đàn hạc của Paraguay, trống tabla của Ấn Độ, duduk của Mỹ, didgeridoo của Australia...

Yanni có tên đầy đủ là Yanni Chrysssomalist, sinh năm 1954 tại Kalamata, một tỉnh nhỏ của Hy Lạp. Được cha mẹ khuyến khích, cậu bé Yanni đã bộc lộ năng khiếu âm nhạc từ nhỏ nhưng tình yêu âm nhạc chỉ ngấm ngầm chảy trong người cậu. Năm 18 tuổi, khi nhập cư vào Mỹ, theo học ngành tâm lý học, niềm đam mê cũ đột ngột trỗi dậy, thôi thúc Yanni hơn bao giờ hết.

Album đầu tay Optimystique (1980) với số lượng tiêu thụ 20 triệu bản quả là đáng nể. Dù thành công lớn với Optimystique, các băng đĩa của Yanni hiếm khi được phát trên các đài phát thanh tại Mỹ hay nước ngoài, cho đến khi anh trở lại quê nhà để ghi âm album Live at the Acropolis. Buổi diễn dưới bóng ngôi đền Parthenon 2.500 năm tuổi quả là việc mạo hiểm. Không có một nhà tài trợ nào, Yanni vét sạch vốn liếng tích cóp bao năm tại Mỹ để làm một chương trình hòa nhạc lớn chưa từng có, với mục đích tạo cú hích lớn, mở ra một thị trường âm nhạc mới. Đáng mừng Live at the Acropolis trở thành một trong những băng hình best-seller. Ngay cả Yanni cũng không ngờ, cuộc mạo hiểm tại quê nhà lại thành công đến vậy.

Rồi Yanni nhận ra, dường như anh chỉ thành công vang dội khi trình diễn tại những vùng đất, địa danh gắn liền với lịch sử. Sau Acropolis ở Hy Lạp, Yanni tổ chức hòa nhạc tại đền Taj Mahal linh thiêng của Ấn Độ và Tử Cấm Thành uy nghi của Trung Quốc. Hai buổi trình diễn này đã mang lại thành công cho băng video năm 1997 và album Tribute. Album mới nhất của Yanni, Ethnicity, trình làng một sự pha trộn đầy thú vị, điểm nhấn của album là một bản dân ca truyền thống của Hy Lạp Jiva-Eri do Yanni thể hiện, là câu chuyện về những đứa trẻ rời xa gia đình để tìm cuộc sống tốt đẹp hơn.

Bên cạnh CD mới phát hành, những người hâm mộ thích tìm đọc tác phẩm tự thuật Yanni in words. Quyển sách kể về những chuyển biến để Yanni trở thành một ngôi sao quốc tế, chuyện tình với ngôi sao truyền thông Mỹ Linda Evans, triết lý sống và cả âm nhạc của Yanni nữa.
